Time Management games are for gamers who love playing different games where you need to manage a restaurant, beauty salon, farm, hotel, etc. Time Management Games are one of the most popular genres. They should sell it aggressively - say $99 - and make it work on a Mac directly, without intermediate programs like Parallels or Boot Camp. Programs for Windows PC should work on Mac Windows. https://wap-software.mystrikingly.com/blog/mental-house-mac-os. So I have a new Macbook. I know, I know, I should have waited till October 14th for the new ones, but my old laptop more or less blew up, and also reached a point where it no longer met my requirements, so waiting wasn't an option. And for the money, I'm quite pleased with it really.
Anyway, I'm learning to cope in Mac-land and have most of the basics figured out so far, although I may post another thread with deeper questions soon.
But right now I have an issue. My MacBook has spontaneously decided that connecting to SMB shares on my Vista server is beneath it. I say spontaneously as it was working, but now its not.
I used to be able to map drives using SMB://hostname. When I do that now I get 'Connection failed - there was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.' OK, name resolution problem, no biggy, and one I'll troubleshoot later.
However using SMB://IPADDRESS also fails, with the same error. But I get more detail - 'The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'SMB://192.168.10.121' could not be read or written. (Error code -36)'.
Now, basic connectivy does exist. I can use a browser on my Mac to open an HTTP site hosted on the server, so this seems to be SMB only. Firewall doesn't seem to be an issue, as other Windows PCs can map those shares just fine.
I did google and the only result I found indicated that this is caused by the Vista PC requiring cleartext passwords, which are unsupported on OSX. Well, that's lies, I checked and my Vista configuration fully supports encrypted passwords and in fact that's exactly how my Windows PCs are connecting. So I'm stumped. Help. Please. Thanks.SOLVED thanks to Hotdog -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif --
I'll just add, since I'm feeling rant-y, that this is precisely the kind of interoperability Apple need to nail to make switching painless. I won't ever likely be an all-Mac household, and certainly will have Windows-based SMB shares around until such time as Apple release something that approaches Vista MediaCenter in terms of functionality, so its frustrating that something as simple as mapping a drive doesn't work.
Free bonus question 1: On my Windows PCs I can have mapped drives auto-reconnect at logon. This seems impossible on OSX unless I'm missing something (which I probably am). I wouldn't care but my iTunes library is mounted over the network and if I haven't established the connection before launching iTunes it throws a tantrum because it thinks the files are missing. Is this fixable?Free bonus question 2: One thing I miss from Windows is being able to Alt-Tab between open windows for a given application. For example, as I compose this thread, Firefox has two windows open, the one I'm using to browse the forums, and the one I'm using to compose the message. On Windows I can alt-tab between them. On the Mac Option-Tab will just switch me between applications, not windows within an application. Is the functionality I desire hidden behind another keyboard shortcut? I know about expose but its not as quick -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif --SOLVEDFree bonus question 3: Are there keyboard shortcuts for page up/page down? I down Option Up/Down is Home/End, which helps a little, but not enough. SOLVED, or close enough anyway.
Free bonus question 4: Is there an equivalent of Alt+Letter to open a menu? In Windows-land I do a lot of menu navigation via the keyboard. Is this do-able on OSX or am I meant to memorise the keyboard shortcuts for each individual menu option?
Free bonus question 5: Can I emulate a middle-click via the one-button trackpad? I miss middle-click to open in a new tab in Firefox.Free bonus question 6: Can I disable the 'boing!' sound it makes when you boot it up? SOLVED
Free bonus question 7: I lied, there is no bonus question 7. But I'll post more as I think of them -- View image here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif --
